I came across an article on the Lonely Planet website today called “How To Plan an Around The World Trip.”
The concept of an around the world trip has always intrigued me. There are so many exciting places to see and so many interesting cultures to discover. I have always thought I would like to do this, but have never been able to figure out how people logistically make this happen.
What do you think? How do people actually make around the world trips happen? Have you or any of your friends or family done this? Do you have any tips for people who would like to do this? Is this something you would be interested in doing? Do you think you ever will take one of these trips? Where would you be most excited to visit?

Mostly when I travel, it’s not about the sights but the people. Different cultures and perspectives facinate me….BUT..there is one sight I WOULD like to see….the Pyramids in Eygpt. 🙂

I’m planning such a trip right now, but I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself to actually “go around the world”. I’ve got a one-way ticket and hopefully I’ll make my way back somehow, through interesting places:)

I’m starting with North America, then flying to NZ/Australia, then SE Asia, then I don’t know! I’m so excited to see Hoh Rain Forest in Washington State of all places. But also the glow worm caves in NZ and my friends in India:)

I think the only way to do an around the world trip (unless you have access to a hot air balloon) is to be: 1. independently wealthy, 2.work your way around–and you have to have a certain amount of energy and flexiblity to handle option #2. We managed a third option, which was to move our family to Europe and live, work and travel there for a few years. It wasn’t the whole world, but it was some of the best parts of it! 😉
That makes sense to me. Did you move with at least one job? And where did you live in Europe?
We moved with one job, two adults, and four kids. 😉 We lived just outside of Munich, Germany,.

Someday soon I hope to travel a lot more than I do now. It’s just hard when you’ve got kiddies (one of them still being in diapers).
Absolutely. That adds a whole other layer of complexity, I’m sure!
I think the best way to do this is by ship. That way you can live comfortbably and have fun while you travel. The ship can stop along every port. No need to be in any particular place for more than a few hours…take a tour for a couple of hours then do a little shopping. When you are finished, get back on the ship. Do you think this is actually possible? If so, I bet it will cost a bundle.
I think the only way you could do it if you were not very wealthy is to go a budget route. I don’t know if it’s possible for me. But I do know folks who have done some version of this. I would love to make it happen!!!!! Thanks for your comment and for reading! I always appreciate your comments!
I am having trouble planning a 5 day trip. There always seems to be another great place nearby. I may need 80 days to go through 2 states. Editing out locations would be hard on a world tour.
Absolutely! You would realy need a lot of time to make this work. I have heard 6 months or a year, but that is why it seems so difficult to make it happen. How many people can just walk away from the rest of their lives for 6 months to a year unless they were independently wealthy – or perhaps simply redefine their goals. I love the concept but am not sure how to turn it into a reality. Thanks for your comment!

I absolutely would LOVE to travel around the world, but I think I’d like more than 80 days to do it all. I wish I could convince Hubby that we should do it NOW, before we’re too old to go to places where we can’t bring a wheelchair! Unfortunately, he’s a bit of a penny-pincher and feels we don’t have the money to just take off – plus he doesn’t have a retirement plan & only gets a max of 3 weeks of holidays a year! (sigh!)
My sister-in-law and her family toured all over Canada & the continental U. S. one year. They enrolled their kids in Internet School, packed up their RV and pointed it west. When they ran out of land they headed south. Fortunately, her hubby has a job where he can just phone it in, so he could afford to take off like that. Must be nice!
Me too! My hubby is game if we can find a way to do it. Although I think he would be more open to living abroad for some time and working rather than taking off completely. We don’t have kids, so we may be able to make something happen eventually. Thanks for the comment and the inspiration!
I would love to do this and will make it happen at some point in a not too distant future. I think spending a year and then working a bit along the way would make sence and give you a chance to really soak up the different places and not just blast through.. But soooo many places – how is it possible to decide?! I guess even a whole year could become tight 🙂

I have been fortunate and traveled to some fantastic places…and yet, as I think of this – how could I really see the world in only 80 days?? I would want to stop and explore and I don’t know if I could do it in such a short period of time…Definitely food for thought – and daydreaming!

Good post. Just got through watching “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and recommend all see it. It is playing in select theaters, so you have to work to find it. It jives with the theme of your post about seeing the world you have not seen. Thanks again for making us think. You are the best.
