Travel Theme: Secret Places

This week, Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Challenge post includes an enchanting description of a secret place in Times Square in New York City, where, simply by standing in the right place on top of the subway grates, people are serenaded by a symphony of bells and tonal sounds, which drowns out the noise of the city and creates a “secret peaceful island in the middle of a sea of chaos.” Please go check out her story – I dare you not to want to visit this secret space in New York City!

When I thought about this travel challenge, I was immediately transported to one of my favorite places on earth – Patagonia, Argentina. Hundreds of miles down a dirt road, on our way to Villa Pehuenia, exhausted after hours and hours of driving, we were awestruck when we came upon the magnificent area in these photos.

As I thought more about this challenge, a song that we used to sing in Girl Scout Camp kept coming into mind. I have not thought of this song in over 25 years, but I loved the song then, and it still resonates with me. In fact, I think the song is even more special now, as I understand the words better than when I was younger.

I know a place where no one ever goes
There’s peace and quiet, beauty and repose
It’s hidden in a valley beside a mountain stream
And lying there beside it
I find that I can dream
Only of things of beauty to the eyes;
Snow-capped mountains rising to the sky.
Now I know that God made this place for me
For me, God made this place for me.
One can imagine herself as in a dream
Climbing up a mountain or down a small ravine
The magic of the peace and quiet ever shall stay
To make this place a haven every day
Oh how I wish I never had to leave
All my life such Beauty to receive
Now I know that God had made this place for me,
Oh yes, for me.

  1. Oh Jennifer, what a magical place (and the Girl Scout lyrics compliment it perfectly). I’m getting Wanderlust just looking at those sumptuous photos. xxx Ailsa

  2. I know a beautiful place, too. It’s Bolder, Colorado. I spent a month there one year and fell in love with the area. I believe you know it pretty well??!!

  3. I’ve never heard that song but the lyrics are beautiful!

    • Aren’t they???!! And I had no real concept of what they meant when I was little, I probably just liked the tune. But now they are so special and describe a place that I search for!!! And I literally had not thought of them in decades! So fun!! Thanks so much for your comment!

  4. Wow! The pictures are just beautiful! There are so many lovely places to visit…so much to see. Thanks for posting. And the song says it all, and is so beautiful..

  5. That space in New York City sounds pretty intriguing. It reminds me of a scene from Babylon 5 when the Vorlon sent the Captain to a space within the station where he heard what sounded like monks singing.

Your photos are beautiful and make me long to travel to those beautiful, peaceful places. I have ‘pinned’ many such photos on one of my Pinterest boards of places I want to go, eventually. 🙂

    • Doesn’t it? I really would love to check it out. Thanks for the compliment! I’m with you – so many places I want to see – so little time…and money! 🙂 Thanks so much for your comment!

  7. Dermatology didn’t interest me that much until I took Clinicals 1 and we waethcd a video of the Medical Assistant cleaning a wound and we did competencies on how to send lab tests off, how to clean wounds, how to look for infection, and how to remove staples and that all fascinated me. It seems like in dermatology, you could get a variety of skin situations and they are all important. I think that I would be more involved with the patient and assist the physician a lot which I like.I think the physician I would least want to work for would be a urologist just because I don’t think I would get to do as much on the clinical side besides taking vitals but I am interested in many specialties so I am eager to hear what you are all interested in as well!
