Note to My Readers: Times They Are a-Changin’…Maybe

I am thinking about making a small adjustment to the newsofthetimes.org and would love your thoughts. Some of the posts here have been thrown together at the speed of light, without as much time and attention as I would like to give them.

I couldn’t love blogging more. This has been a fantastic outlet for my creativity and a place to share my thoughts. You all have been more supportive than I ever could have imagined. I have loved getting to know all of your blogs, which have made me laugh and think and smile and cry.

I have been writing every day for the past several months, but I am thinking about cutting back to every other day. I would still do Tunes Tuesday and one photography post a week, but I would be more thoughtful about the news stories I post and this would allow more time for conversation.

One friend told me that she enjoys reading the news stories I post, but we move on to a new topic too quickly for her to join the discussion. Maybe she has a point.

I am torn about this, because I absolutely love spending my mornings writing. But this would give me more time to visit all of your posts and still keep my day job. 🙂

What do you think? I would really welcome honest feedback on this idea. This blog has not felt like a burden in any way – I have loved absolutely every minute of this and it has become an important part of my day, enabling me to reconnect with something deep inside that had not been nurtured lately. So please be honest. Do you think this new format would allow more time for meaningful discussion on the news stories I pick? Or do you feel like daily posts, with a few lighter news items helps create variety that might be lost if I switch to the new model?

Maybe I could just try the new model on for size for a few weeks and see how it feels.

I would really love to hear your thoughts. Thank you so much for faithfully reading and commenting. As I originally imagined, the conversation here is the best part, and that is because of you, so thank you from the bottom of my heart! Your support has made this experience more special than I can say.

  1. I think you should try different posting schedules and see what fits you best. We change as we grow and there’s really no right or wrong way to post. I enjoy your posts and will look forward to them whenever they appear.

    • Thank you so much. I may feel a real sense of loss not to post every day, so maybe I’ll just give it a try and see if I can handle that. But it would also be nice to have a little more time to explore other beautiful blogs. We shall see…thanks so much for weighing in. It means a lot.

  2. I’m about to take a break from the blog as well to address another project, and I wrote about that on my site just today. I understand the dilemma you face, but I think it’s sometimes necessary that we make that choice. It is for me, at least.

    • Thank you for the support. I am not sure it is the right move for me right now, but I want to see how it evolves and make sure I am keeping the right pace for my readers and for myself…we shall see. I may be too addicted to flexing my creative muscles ona daily basis to reduce the number of posts. But if it leads to a richer discussion and more thoughtful posts, that could be a good thing. Thanks so much for helping me think through this and good luck with your transition.

  3. Dear News,
I totally understand. I, myself, should probably try such a thing.
    But I lOVE posting!!!
(I rarely post anything less than 2, and sometimes 3 times a day!)
I’m hoping it’s because it’s all new to me.
And I will weary of multiple posts.
    But, I love the idea.
For one thing, when I post….I whip that puppy out in 2 seconds flat.
I wonder what it would be like if I actually spent a couple of days on ONE post?
You are a good writer, you don’t need to.
But, I would probably benefit from a 2 day writing post.
Plus, I could make it around to my friend’s blogs more.
    WHich I love and adore.
I may take a page from your book, if you don’t mind.
    I think it’s a great idea♥
    Love, Lis

There is nothing magic about posting every day. The quality is what’s important, not quantity. I always enjoy your work, so I will look forward to your posts, no matter when they appear in my inbox.

    • 🙂 Thank you so much for the encouragement. It means a lot. We shall see if I can stick to an every other day model. I may just miss it too much! 🙂 Thanks again for the support.

  5. It just may be a good idea for you to blog every other day. That would give you more time, and less stress. While I am dealing with my sick mom, I can only commit to blogging 3 times a week…when I am having a good week..

    • Wise advice from my favorite nurse. 🙂 It’s hard to say, because this is an excellent stress relief for me in so many ways. But maybe I’ll give it a try and see how it feels. Thanks so much for all your support and encouragement. I am glad to hear you are taking care of yourself while taking care of your mom. Both very important. Thanks again for all your support and encouragement!

  6. I certainly enjoy your posts, but admittedly can’t read them all at the rate they arrive in my inbox! I suspect I’m not the only one, and that many of us choose the titles that most appeal to us. Nothing wrong with cutting back, nor with posting every day. See what works…

    • Yay! That is great confirmation. I will just have to see how this goes. Selfishly, I love posting every day, but I do think that I could visit other people’s blogs more regularly, which I LOVE and it could allow for more time for discussion, which is really the goal. We’ll se how it goes. Thanks so much for the support and for keeping up with my lightening speed pace. 🙂

  7. Do what feels right for you but I agree that maybe more time before the next topic. I don’t always take time to comment but often read other comments. Keep writing and blogging!

    • Thank you!!! I appreciate the support. As I have said to others, we will have to see if I can stay away from the publish button since I have loved it so much. But maybe quality will turn out to be better than quantity in this space. Thanks so much for the comment!

  8. I pay more attention to the posts that come out weekly, rather than daily, or five or ten times a day, because I have only so much time for each person. I try to post every week, although it has been longer than that since I have posted. I would rather have, as you say, one quality conversation and be able to keep up with it.

  9. The fact that you are considering a change is indicative of….a change?

    • Maybe. I am just considering it, but I am not sure it is what I really want. I think I will try it out and see how it feels. I guess that is how most changes happen, right? Thanks so much for reading and leaving a comment!

  10. I think it’s something we both should do! I am with you: I love writing every morning. But it does take time away from reading other blogs — and books as well! Do what feels good to you! I manage to keep up and look forward to reading your blogs. But I have the time. Not everyone does.

  11. Change of schedule can’t hurt. If you decide you miss daily, than you can return to it.

  12. Follow your muse….Keep the receipt is perfect 8)

  13. You can take my opinion with a grain of salt since I just barely started following you, but I started my blog as a daily post as well and did so for a couple months. But it was hard to follow other blogs daily, and I began to appreciate other blogs that didn’t post daily. It was just very hard to keep up with them all and comment all the time. Most of the blogs that I started with and have been following have all cut back gradually to what I do now (about 2-3 times a week). Some weeks might have more if something newsworthy happens, but I find it’s easier for others to follow all my posts and me to follow theirs when we don’t do absolutely every day! But to each their own. Do what you like! I guess that the best advice.

  14. This is what I have gleened from my relatively short time blogging:
    – when we first start we have a sense we must retain our original momentum otherwise we will lose readers
    – this is not really true if you still post regularly. Some of the best bloggers only post 2 times a week
    – content is king and if taking a day break in between means your content is the best it can be, then that’s not a bad thing
    – you need to keep blogging fun, so do whatever works for you.

You do cover a great variety of interesting topics and sometimes the rapadity of the switch means I can’t comment as I would like or my comments come 2-3 days after the original post, by which time everyone has moved on to the next wonderful topic.

    • Yay! That is exactly why I am thinking about making the switch. It is honestly not because I am tired of posting, but sometimes we get a great conversation going and then it stops because I move on to something else, sometimes just something silly I found. And the conversation is the best part! Thanks for validating what my friend told me. I really appreciate the support, encouragement and advice!

  15. I think it’s very thoughtful of you to keep your readers informed about your thoughts & what you’re going through. I agree with Monique E’s comment, to try a few different solutions to see what works best for you. I think it’s healthy to allow the mind to rest & regenerate – I find it’s when my best ideas form, in those moments of ‘vegetation’ & relaxation. Follow your own rhythm, wherever that takes you, and run with it. 🙂

  16. One other idea that I’m pursuing is to write posts ahead so that you could potentially post every day, but not necessarily be writing every day. That could free up time to do other activities, but it does require planning ahead.

I decided this idea might work for me when I heard that Seth Godin, a marketing guru and blogger Seth Godin writes every day, but also writes blogs ahead of time.

This is a tough question that I think most of us must face at one time or another. For me, I am committed to sharing a post every day this year, but next year, i might switch to a different schedule, depending on the needs of my life and readers.

Just make sure whatever decision you make is the right one for you. I’ll read your blog no matter what schedule you decide! 🙂

    Karen

    • That’s a great idea and I just figured out last night how to schedule a post. I was so excited I had trouble going to sleep! I think that is really going to help with busy mornings. Thanks so much for the tip! I still think I might try fewer posts and maybe journal in between just to see if it allows conversations to keep going. Thanks again for the tip and for being a loyal reader! It means a lot!

  17. Jen,
I love your blog! Your posts keep me connected to what’s going on in the outside world. Between taking care of my toddler son and trying to keep up with my own blog and side projects I sometimes tend to cocoon myself and so I always look forward to your posts. They keep me abreast of what’s going on out there. I can tell your mind loves to take in new information and the wheels are always turning. I will say though, that you crank out posts so fast that just when a topic of yours is marinating in my head and I would like to comment, the next post comes out and I’m off to thinking of your latest post and never even commented on the one from the day before. I think giving readers a little more time to digest, mull over topic and comment would be wonderful however, it’s your blog so do what feels right for you. Either way I will keep reading and thanks for helping me stay connected!

    • Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful comment. That is just why I think I will cut back and leave a day or two between posts. I have loved the conversation and the last thing I want to do is cut that short! Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment!

Your writings are always clear, concise, informative and entertaining. Whatever schedule works for you will be good – I’ll be reading!

I think there’s no harm in trying a new schedule for a while – sometimes it can be good for us to shake things up! And just because you change your posting schedule doesn’t mean you have to give up writing every morning, either, if that’s what makes you happy 🙂

    • I was thinking I could journal or – heaven forbid – exercise on off mornings. I think I will try it on for a few weeks to see how it goes. Don’t miss me too much tomorrow! 🙂 Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts!! And for the encouragement and support!
