Homemade Twinkies? Is someone really going to make those?

The second most read New York Times article right now (after a cool interactive tool that will help you plan your Thanksgiving meal) is a recipe for homemade Twinkies.

While I feel as sad about the news that Hostess is folding as anyone, I am intrigued that there has been such a national outcry about this. And I am more intrigued that anyone would want to make homemade Twinkies.

I find it very interesting how food is linked to our emotions in this country – perhaps in every country.

I have to admit – I believe I have shared this here before – when my sweet gentle giant of a pup passed away in 2010 while I was in Argentina, I had an undeniable craving to head straight to McDonalds and get some salty french fries. They tasted like home to me and I needed that.

I suppose that the multi-national corporations who tempt us with ever bigger portions and even more fat-laden options are well aware of this connection, and in fact work hard every day to make that type of link with their products. It is a powerful force.

But Twinkies? I have to admit to being a little pleased – I know this will be seen as blasphemy by many – that Hostess has struggled. I am not sure that there is a speck of nutritional value in a single one of their products. (Feel free to correct me if I am wrong – it has happened before and will likely happen again).

I am sorry about the lost jobs and I will miss having that guilty pleasure calling out to me from the convenience store when I am on a road trip. But maybe now that I won’t have that temptation, I will actually reach for a piece of fruit or a string cheese instead. Ya think?

What do you think? How do you feel about the liquidation of Hostess? What is your favorite Hostess product? Why do you think people are so distressed that Hostess is going out of business? And what impact do you think the amotional food connection has had on our waistlines and on our pocketbooks?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for reading!

  1. I’m a little baffled that with the outcry upon its demise, Hostess Twinkies did die! You’d think with everyone who complained, Twinkies would have gone on forever! And, maybe they are going on forever in some bunker, loaded with preservatives as they are. And if we all, presumably, consume so many preservatives, why aren’t we all better preserved? Truly a conundrum…have a great Sunday, Jen! xoxoM

  2. I can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten a Hostess treat, so I can’t say that I’ll miss them. Now, here’s hoping that Dairy Queen doesn’t shut down… 😉

  3. I haven’t had a Hostess treat since the 1980s (because of all the chemicals, artificial ingredients and animal lard used in them) but I’m always sad to see companies fold that have been around so many generations. From what I remember Twinkies were delicious but if I ate one today, my taste buds are healthier so they probably wouldn’t taste the same. I’m sure a homemade Twinkie would be nice — with healthier ingredients 🙂

    • I agree that it’s sad when a company that’s been around for a long time goes under. And this company was a big post of my childhood, but I agree that the company may have done better if they had been able to adapt to the more health conscious times. Thanks so much for the comment!

  4. I’m with seakist on this one. Since I’ve changed my eating habits, when I try something I used to like – BLECH! Having said that, every 5 years or so I try MacDonald’s again because of the comforting feelings it used to have on me, but every time I do – BLECH! Makes me think of lost relationships, you know, sometimes I think I wish my relationship with so-and-so had lasted but truth is, I’m probably just missing how I felt in that relationship!

    • Great analogy. I feel that way about donuts. The last time I had one, I actually encoded yup with a migraine. I think my body just can’t handle that type of junk anymore. Thanks for the comment!!

  5. I hadn’t heard that Twinkies went under. That’s one of those loops I am completely out of. But it is the end of an era and the end of a taste treat! I doubt I will have any home made, however!

  6. Hostess treats make me think of packed lunches in my metal lunchbox with a thermos. I used to live Ding Dongs and remember when the waxy chocolate cream filled hockey puck was wrapped in tin foil. I will miss what Hostess represents, not the actual treats. Definitely an end of an era. ~Gail

  7. One of the Hostess Plants is literally a mile from my house. Honestly, people should be more concerned about the demise of 18,000 jobs nationwide, the fact that under a Chapter 11 the CEO received an exuberant salary and that the striking workers are being blamed for the demise of the freaking Twinkie that is so chock full of chemicals it will outlast this planet. Whew…I will step away from the soapbox now.
As a child RingDings were my Hostess cake of choice.

    • No Twinkies here, we have some copycats, so I will leave this planet never having had a Twinkie [note to self: cross that off bucket list]. But the news of Hostess’ demise and the memes it has generated is unbelievable! I’m sorry for the job losses, particularly in light of the CEO’s last minute cash grab. I guess Hostess didn’t have McDonald’s foresight to change with the times – although I heard the other day that Mickey Dees just posted its first sales decrease in a decade.

    • I didn’t know about that part. Now I’m mad. Thanks so much for reading!!!

  8. Check out Barneysday post on their excessive pay increase to executives the year before. That will make you sicker than any Twinkie would. And, then to blame others goes beyond immoral. I am saddened when people (18,000 employees) are impacted by poor management. Hostess at least made Wonder Bread. I also have not had a Twinkie in ages, so you would think leadership would alter their strategy more to survive since people who respected their teeth and wanted to avoid diabetes stopped eating them. Thanks for writing, BTG

  9. Haven’t a clue what this is all about – twinkies .. they look like cupcakes to me. And what is a hostess treat ??? Need a bit of education here.

    • They are a serious chemical bomb, but we all grew up with them. They are like spongecake filled with cream, more or less. But with so many preservatives, I think they could be stuck in a time capsule for a 100 years and still taste the same. But apparently, they are a cultural comfort food here. Good for you for not knowng twinkies. Some places here, they deep fry them! Yuck!

      • What, deep fry …. ????? Have always said that you over there lives in wired and wonderful world. Thanks for coming back to me. I think I live without them, now when I know what it’s.

  10. Hi Jeni, great post. I have a sweet tooth just as bad as anyone else, although I try hard to keep it in check. Don’t understand all the fuss about Hostess shutting its doors. While I do feel bad for all of its employees…there are so many other companies around that are well established and have wonderful tasting products to choose from. They are just as great as the unforgettable twinkie. I don’t get why some people have taken to the stores and are buying up as much of the sweet Hostess products as possible. Unbelievable.

  11. Jenni, we’ve migrated to Entenmanns. 🙂

  12. I have missed Twinkies for awhile. The ones from my younger days were replaced by chemicals.
Carrie- what is up with you and Dairy Queen today? Craving, maybe? 🙂

  13. Great thought provoking post. In a country of terrible obesity as much as I used to love Twinkies as a girl it is probably good. I can’t even begin to imagine what kind of terrible ingredients are inside. A processed cancer causing hell! I bet the homemade ones are better! I always get so worried about how processed our food is becoming. So despite the loss of jobs perhaps the closing will save a few lives.

  14. Dearest Jen,
This post had me wondering about what other foods ….that if they were to just disappear…would cause my own personal outcry! I wonder if you could guess……(diet coke)….OMG.
    I have to go now.
    I’m thirsty.
    And it ain’t for water.
    heeheehee
    Love always and muchly, Lis

  15. Saw two great quote this AM. (1) “So, it appears Twinkies do have an expiration date.” (2) “Wait. Have we thought ths through. Two states have legalized pot smoking and we are doing away with Twinkies.” Too funny. BTG
