New York Times annual list of 100 notable books

The New York Times came out with their annual list of the100 most notable books of the year.

What do you think? Have you read any of these books? What did you think of it? Do you refer to this list when looking for a good book? What makes a book notable to you?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for reading!

Oddly, I haven’t read any of the books in the list, though I have a few of them in my TBR pile. I typically get suggestions for books to read from friends and from book sites like Goodreads and Shelfari. I’m also a big genre fan (both reader and as an author), so I’m constantly reading books in thriller and romance, both of which I think are highly underrated as having “notable” titles. While I appreciate literary fiction, I think the genre authors can provide just as beautiful a narrative style. (Meanwhile, thanks for reminding me about Alif the Unseen (on the list)….going to go download it to my Kindle.)

  2. I’ve only read a few of the books on the list. Looks like I have some reading to do! 🙂

  3. Thanks for the link. I shared it on FB. Looks like I have some reading to do.

  4. It would be interesting to compare an ebook list with a hard cover one. Just twelve months ago I said that I would never read ebooks, then received a Kindle for Christmas and have not bought a hardcover book for myself since. I am an avid reader but have read none on the list. I enjoy biographies, history, philosophy and educating myself so there are a few on the list I would like to try. Thanks for providing.

    • You are so right. I would like to see that. I agree – I have read so muc more since I got a Kindle. I am obssessed and love the convenience. Although I certainly love the feel and smell of a library book when I can get it! Thanks so much for the comment!

  6. NofT: thx for sharing the NYT list; i’ve reposted. RT

  7. Sadly to say I haven’t read any of the books and only a handful of titles were familiar. I’m surprised I didn’t know more but it helps me plan my 2013 reading list. Thanks! ~Gail

  8. Kinda like the Oscars…heard of a couple but have no clue about the ones listed. 8)

  9. Predictably, I see nothing I am familiar with. This list seems to have been made by the folks at Walden Books or perhaps Barnes and Nobles. It is a mixed bag at best from the look of it. I will stick with the “classics.”
