Tuesday Tunes: Ramble On and Awards Galore!

Fall in Colorado
Copyright JC Politi Photography

This week’s Tunes Tuesday pick is Ramble On by Led Zeppelin, who may just be my favorite band of all time. I chose this song this week because I am heading out of town for a 40th birthday and five year anniversary celebration vacation to Europe!

I will be gone for the next two weeks, so this post is meant to keep you occupied while I’m out. I will honestly miss all of you when I am gone and I may even peek in from time to time to see what is happening in your worlds. But for the most part, I will be eating chocolate croissants and tapas and drinking sangria and champagne…and taking pictures!!

What do you think? Do you have any suggestions for must-do unique activities in Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam or Berlin? Have you taken any special trips to celebrate a milestone? What is your favorite memory from that trip?

I will include the Tunes Tuesday lyrics below, but I first wanted to acknowledge some awards I have received over the past month. My hope is that while I am gone, readers will take time to visit the great blogs who have honored me with awards and to visit the blogs I am passing awards on to. I promise, you will not regret taking the time to do this!

Ramble On
Led Zeppelin

Leaves are falling all around, It’s time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I’m much obliged for such a pleasant stay.
But now it’s time for me to go. The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, and with it pain, and it’s headed my way.
Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know I’ve got one thing I got to do…

Chorus: Ramble On, And now’s the time, the time is now, to sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin’ roots, The time has come to be gone.

Mine’s a tale that can’t be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T’was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her….yeah.

Gonna ramble on, sing my song. Gotta keep-a-searchin’ for my baby…
Gonna work my way, round the world. I can’t stop this feelin’ in my heart
Gotta keep searchin’ for my baby. I can’t find my bluebird!

I would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you so much for reading!

The Illuminating Blogger Award and Some Illuminating Quotes from the Alchemist

Earlier this week, In Blue kindly nominated me for the Illuminating Blogger Award. I love the Illuminating Blogger image, with a single candle flame burning brightly. Personally, when I stare at a candle for long enough, I find that I am usually illuminated in some way.

Thank you so much to In Blue for the nomination. If you have not checked out her blog yet, please do so. It is a true feast for the eyes and the soul.

The rules for this award are simple. I just need to tell one random thing about myself. One random thing that seems somewhat related to the Illuminating Blogger Award is that Paulo Coelho’s, The Alchemist, is the first and only book I have ever read in one sitting. Many years ago, I read the first few pages of the book and realized I had found a jewel. I turned off my phone, sat on the floor and read straight through, start to finish.

I thought I would share some of my favorite quotes from this special book (which sits dog-eared and full of underlines on my bookshelf):

Everyone seems to have a clear idea about how other people should live their lives, but none about his or her own.

At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate – that ‘s the world’s greatest lie.

[A Personal Legend is] what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend.

When a person really wants something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.

When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.

The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never forget the drops of oil on the spoon.

We have to take advantage when luck is on our side, and do as much to help it as it’s doing to help us. It’s called the principle of favorability. Or beginner’s luck.

Making a decision is only the beginning of things. When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he never dreamed of when he first made the decision.

He had loved her before he even knew she existed.

Before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way…That’s the point at which most people give up. It’s the point at which, as we say in the language of the desert, one dies of thirst, just when the palm trees have appeared on the horizon.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

That’s what alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to be better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.

What do you think? What is your Personal Legend? What books have you read in one sitting? What books do you return to again and again to read what you have underlined or dog-eared?

I would also like to pass this award along to some illuminating blogs. I have recently found most of these and have truly enjoyed their work. I hope you will take a moment to visit each of them:

Thank you again to In Blue for the nomination. I am truly honored. And thank you all for reading.

THANK YOUs and Appreciation! An Embarassment of Riches

I am in absolute awe of the support and encouragement I have received from the blogging community since starting this blog. In the last two weeks, I have received 4 more recognitions from my peers! I honestly cannot believe it and can’t thank the people who nominated me enough for their support.

There are rules for all of these awards, but I may do a hybrid here.

Last week, Gina’s Professions for Peace nominated me for both the Inspiring Blogger Award and the Thanks for Writing Award. You should check out Gina’s blog – it is always interesting and engaging. On her “about” page, she writes “It is my intention to offer thought-provoking ideas that foster joy, hope, and inspiration.” I would say that she succeeds in this on a daily basis.

Midnight Coffee Monster nominated me today for the One Lovely Blog Award. This blog offers interesting book reviews and other insights.

Jensinewall, who I have nominated in the past for at least one award, because I love her writing, nominated me for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. She describes herself as “a writer, designer and creative thinker living and working in Dublin.” And this week, she showed us that she also has skills with a camera, so I am even more impressed by this Jane of All Trades!

Thank you so much to all three of you for your thoughtful recognition of my feeble attempts to generate conversation.

I am not sure what the rules are for all of these awards, but most of them ask for a few interesting tidbits about me. So here goes: I love to go to antique stores and second hand stores to see what treasures I might find there, I have to fight against my laziness sometimes to get out the door to exercise, my first best friend went to Togo, Africa with her parents in the Peace Corps when we were about 7 years old and ever since I have wanted to do the Peace Corps, I miss Baltimore crabs in the summer, I love libraries and used book stores and hope books never go out of style.

Some blogs I have really enjoyed lately, many of which I have mentioned in previous awards speeches 🙂

Goss Coaching: This is a new blog that I feel that I cannot live without. The author offers short wellness tips and helpful longer blog posts about personal development and balance. I can’t get enough of this one.

Musings of an Old Fart

Talk to Diana

Carr Party of Five

Salty Political Musings

Raising the Curtain

Where’s My Backpack

Waiting for the Karma Truck

The Healthy Warrior

I would like to nominate each of these blogs for each of these awards, since I think they are simply the best! Thank you again to all of the thoughtful bloggers who nominated me for these awards and to all of my readers! Let’s keep the conversation going!

Kreativ Blogger Award!

I was honored earlier this week when fellow blogger jensinewall nominated me for the Kreativ Blogger Award! I am so honored and humbled that people are actually interested in reading my thoughts and appreciative of the great dialogue that has developed here. Without question, the best part of every newsofthetimes post has been to see people’s reactions and thoughts, so please keep those coming!

Kreativ Blogger Award Rules:

2) Give 7 interesting things about yourself

3) Nominate 7 blogs that you would like to give the Kreativ Blogger Award & let them know!

1.) Thank you to jensinewall, who is a great writer and always has something interesting to say. I try to read her blog daily and always find something worth commenting on. She has also been very supportive of my blog, which I have appreciated more than she can know.

2.) Seven interesting things about myself…I love travel, another favorite food is Vacarro’s cannolis from Baltimore, I was a complete tomboy as a child, my puppy – who is now a teenager – is the love of my life, I am terrible at staying in touch with friends, but can usually pick up with them right where we left off, I wanted to be the first female professional baseball pitcher when I was younger – that, or an opera singer!

3.) Nominate Seven Blogs:There are so many interesting blogs out there to choose from, but here are some which I recently found and have enjoyed:

Two More Awards – Such a Bounty of Appreciation!

This past week, I received two more awards for newsofthetimes.org!!! I am so thrilled, in a world with so many creative bloggers, writers and photographers, that anyone would take the time to recognize my work. It is truly an honor and a privilege.

I am overwhelmed with the kindness and encouragement I have received from this creative and supportive community. So, THANK YOU!

First, a little delayed, I would like to thank FortheLoveofBooks, who nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award. I hope that all of you took a moment to visit his blog, since he was on the list of blogs that I nominated for the Sunshine Award this past weekend. If you can believe it, Life With the Top Down also nominated me for this award. I am so honored and can’t wait to check out the list of fellow nominees chosen by these creative individuals!

Rules for The Versatile Blogger Award

    • If you’re nominated, you’ve been awarded The Versatile Blogger Award.
    • Thank the person who gave you this award.
    • Include a link to their blog.

Select 15 blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly.

Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award — you might include a link to this site.

Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

So, let me start with the really fun part – naming 15 bloggers whose work I admire.

Some blogs that have really inspired me lately are:

Salty Political Musings: Good insights into all things political

Postcard Intellect: Absolutely stunning photography and great adventures

Waiting for the Karma Truck: Thoughtful, interesting and funny commentary on work, life and everything in between

Hungry Lindsay: Book and movie reviews with a healthy dose of humor

Where’s My Backpack: Fantastic photos and fun photo challenges with lots of participation from a bunch of great blogs

The Jotter’s Joint: Well written, visually appealing and funny

The View Outside: Currently hosting interesting guest blogs where readers get to see the people behind the blogs!

Orange Spice Drop: Funny with great colors and visuals

The Bookshelf of Emily J.: Great book reviews and interesting choices of books

Policy Thinkshop: Encourages us to “Think Together,” frequently link to the same news stories that I write about

Politics from the Eyes of an Ebony Mom: Always thought provoking and informative

Beyond PR: Helpful tips for working in the world of public relations and writing

Thinking the Unthinkable: This blog is just getting started, but the author is thoughtful and thorough in his analyses

Craves Adventure: This blog just exudes fun and adventure, and makes you think at the same time!

Talk to Diana: Always good for a giggle and has been very supportive of my work

Seven things about myself:

1.)    I am right on the line between introvert and extrovert, although most people think I am an extrovert. Too much time with people or too much time away from people and I get cranky.

2.)    I have always wanted to volunteer for the Peace Corps.

3.)    I have done 3 marathons and two 500 mile + bike rides and played sports throughout high school and college, but now I am pretty lazy.

4.)    Nothing makes me happier than a Saturday morning walk with my pup.

5.)    I love mashed potatoes. It is almost weird how much.

6.)    I am torn between wanting to live closer to my family and wanting to live near mountains.

7.)    I frequently wish I had studied Spanish instead of Russian in college. Especially since my in-laws only speak Spanish.

I was also nominated for the Readers Appreciation Award by C’est La Vie! Thanks so much for the nomination C’est La Vie! With a tag line like “Learning to accept whatever curve ball life throws at you,” how can you NOT check it out?

The rules for the Readers Appreciation Award:

  • List something you’ve been up to lately.
  • Nominate 6 other blogs.

Six blogs that I find interesting:

Management and Career: Interesting commentary and advice on how to survive and thrive in the professional world

Writing More Than a Few Words: A fun blog with great visuals and interesting fashion tips and advice

A New Thing Every Day: This has been a fun blog to follow. I especially loved her letter to her mayor about the importance of libraries.

Sweetandweak: This blog makes me laugh out loud

Sticky Notes and Quotes: What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good quote!

Truth and Cake: Thoughtful and fun to read

And finally, something I have been up to: My husband and I are trying to work out the details to go on a summer vacation – maybe Spain. If so, this may turn into a travel and photo blog for about a week. 🙂

Thanks again to FortheLoveofBooks, Life With the Top Down and C’est La Vie for the recognition and for all your support since I started this journey.

I won!! They DO love me!!

As a newbie blogger, I am truly honored and humbled by being nominated for the Sunshine Award by fellow blogger jensinewall, whose blog posts have made me laugh out loud and inspired me to think about something in a new way. I hope you will check out her blog when you have a moment.

Three months ago, I didn’t even understand what a blog was and I had no idea how to actually follow a blog if I happened to find one I thought was interesting. Since I started newsofthetimes.org, I feel like I have entered an alternate universe, where life is as it should be.

The blogging universe is such a supportive place, full of incredibly talented people, who encourage each other to create and explore. I have been truly touched by the people that I have met in a few short months and cannot express my appreciation enough for jensinewall and all of the other people who have inspired and encouraged my work.

There are a few rules to accepting this award:

  • Include the award’s logo in a post or on your blog.
  • Answer 10 questions about yourself.
  • Nominate other fabulous bloggers.
  • Link your nominees to this post and comment on their blogs, letting them know they      have been nominated.
  • Share the love and link the person who nominated you.

What is a favorite childhood memory? Most of my favorite childhood memories revolve around my summer camp, Camp Conowingo, which I attended all summer, every summer from age 6 until I was 14 or 15. We slept in platform tents, roasted marshmallows and sang songs around a campfire, swam, hiked, biked and canoed. I am sure that this experience is what attracted me to Colorado and made me who I am today.

What is a real fear you have? I am afraid of getting too consumed in my work and neglecting the people who are most important to me.

How would you describe yourself? Spontaneous, adventurous, outdoorsy, animated, hopefully funny and sometimes thoughtful.  Up for just about anything, at least once!

What Countries have you lived in? Just the US, but I have travelled a lot and aspire to live abroad someday – just about anywhere!

What is your style? Outdoor comfort – REI chic!

What is your favorite breakfast food? Sunrise sandwich at the South Side Walnut Café in Boulder, CO

What are some of your hobbies? Biking, photography, camping, hiking, triathlons, reading, watching movies

If you could tell people anything, what would be the most important thing to say? Get involved in your life and the world around you. The world needs your unique set of knowledge, experience and wisdom.

What is one of your passions? Purses…and politics

What is the one truth you have learned? No matter how bad things get, the sun will always rise eventually.

Ten blogs that inspire me:

Hughcurtler: Very thoughtful commentary on the issues of the day by a retired philosophy Professor whose passion for improving the education system is really inspiring

Ecopolitical Economics: Great insight into the economy and politics

Mindful Stew: Thought-provoking posts that make me think

The Solipsistic Me: A social justice warrior, especial for the LGBTQ community

Musings of an Old Fart: Very thoughtful musings on important topics of the day

For the Love of Books: Has reignited my passion for reading and books

Where’s my Backpack?: Fun photo challenges and inspiring photography

Seapunk2: Beautiful writer and a quick wit

Raising the Curtain: Funny, insightful and well written with a good dose of imagery

Talk to Diana: Thoughtful and funny at the same time – that’s a skill!

If you can believe it, as I was writing this, For the Love of Books nominated me for a versatile blogger award! So stay tuned for that acceptance speech in the next week.

Thanks again to jensinewall for the kudos! I am truly honored.

Welcome to News of the Times!

Do you ever read a news article that you would love to discuss with your friends and family? I sure have! Especially on a lazy Sunday morning with a steaming cup of coffee and the SundayNew York Times. That is why I wanted to start this blog. Each week, I will choose one story that really touched me that week and post it for discussion. This is not meant to be a political blog, although inevitably, some of the stories will likely be about politics. I hope readers will take the time to read the story of the week and share their thoughts. So, let’s sit down with a warm beverage – or a cold one if you would prefer – and see what was in the news this week! And thanks for visiting…
